The Carnivals of Las Tablas are the biggest and most important carnaval celebration in the country. They are celebrated for four consecutive days, prior to Ash Wednesday and ends on Wednesday at 7am with the Topon (with each side claiming their triumph, the end of the carnival and to measure forces among the tunas) and the burial of the sardine.
The festivities of the Las Tablas carnival begin on Friday night with the coronation of the Calle Arriba and the Calle Abajo Carnival Queens.
Saturday morning, and so on every morning for the next 3 days, continues with the 'mojaderas' or 'culecos' that take place in the Parque Porras town square with tankers that spray water collected from the surrounding rivers, during the day and part of the afternoon accompanied by popular music (murgas, DJ). The after party takes place in the PH or any other improvised disco-type setting, outside houses or on the street. Then at night there are parades with both Queens wearing carnival costumes on board beautifully decorated floats (usually two: one for the princesses and another one for the Queen), accompanied by a crowd of people called Tunas, who show signs of rivalry while mocking the opposing Queen and followers, as part of the celebration and popular tradition. Every time one of queens go out, fireworks are lit, announcing the star of her outing and presentation. The 4 days, five nights affair is all about dancing, drinking, celebrating and partying!
