Directions to Bocas del Toro surfing spots

In Bocas del Toro you can experience some great surfing spots in the Caribbean coast of Panama that are relatively unknown by most non-Panamanians. This is actually an upcoming surfing destination and it is believed to be one of the best in the country. Surfing here is best from December to March, but in general there is not that much fluctuation of tide during the year.

The best area to stay is on Isla Colon, where there are several places for accommodation at all budgets, and easy to move around the rest of the islands and beaches.

The surf breaks are spread around the different Islands in Bocas del Toro, mainly Isla Colon, Bastimentos and Carenero. Transport between islands is done by water taxis.

The most popular breaks are the following:

Dumpers

A reef bottom left break in Isla Colon with a very steep drop and big tubes. This spot can be dangerous for beginners, so we recommend that only experienced surfers try it. The reef is quite sharp and getting in and out of the water can be tricky. Dumpers also has an inner break called "Inner Dumpers"; a left break over reef bottom with longer and faster rides. We highly recommend surfing with reef booties here for safety reasons.

Punch

Another reef bottom , left and right breaks in Isla Colon with good tubes and perfect to do crazy airs. This spot is suitable for beginners, but the reef is also sharp and reef booties should be worn.

Playa Bluff

It is a beach break also in Isla Colon. This beach is a long stretch of virgin golden sand beach with powerful beach break surf. The tubes on this beach are amazing, but they break very close to the shore. This makes it very popular between body boarders instead of conventional surfers, especially because a lot of surfboards get broken here. However, if you have a lot of experience riding this kind of tubes, go for it ... you will love them!

Carenero

It is a reef break located on the island of Carenero, 5 minute boat ride from Isla Colon. Carenero is one of the best surf breaks at Bocas del Toro with its 200 yard long, peeling lefts, with great tubes breaking over shallow reef. The boat will drop you directly at the break and will pick you up in the water, but we still recommend using surf booties because the reef is shallow and full of sea urchins.

Silverbacks

It is a reef bottom wave located on the island of Bastimentos, 20 minute boat ride from Bocas del Toro town in Isla Colon. Silverbacks is definitively for experienced surfers as it can get up to 25 feet faces. It is a relatively short ride but with large, powerful right break with a big drop and big tubes. You will need a 7'0" or bigger board if you want to surf in this Hawaii like surf spot.

Red Frog Beach

Here you can find both sand and reef bottom breaks with lefts and rights suitable for beginners and experienced surfers.
