Things to do in Panama
Rio Mar is the next immediate beach after El Palmar, taking a left from the Panamerican Highway when coming from Panama City. The entrance is very well signaled so you won’t have a problem to find it.
Be aware that when entering Rio Mar, you will see a neighborhood like area with houses around the street. These are all private properties so you should not block parking spaces there. If you drive right to the end (the asphalt road takes you to the right) you will come across Rio Mar Beach Front condos. This is a private area as well and you cannot access through there. So the way is actually through a rocky road to the left when arriving to the end of the asphalt road.
Rio Mar has 2 breaks to try out
Frente Rio Mar (Rio Mar Front)
It is a good beach break with rights and lefts. It is best at medium to high tides. This beach is quite rocky, so be careful.
Punta Rio Mar (Rio Mar Point)
It is the point break located to the right hand side. It only breaks at low tide but it has rights and lefts. The experienced surfers enjoy this break a lot and they say the rights are the best. To get there you need to walk down the beach for about 1 mile (1.6km) to the point, then walk via some rocks and finally paddle out where the long rock ledge that sticks out from the ocean is. It sounds complicated, but you will see it (at low tide).
There is a surf camp on this beach, so if you need more information you can ask them there. You can also park your car in the camp but they might request a parking fee.
