Description

Led by an Afro-Panamanian guide, this walking tour uncovers a side of Panama City often left out of traditional history tours: the stories, struggles, and contributions of people of African descent who helped shape the country. You'll start inside Casco Antiguo, Panama's colonial old town, then cross beyond the former city walls — the physical line that once separated the colonial elite from the working-class neighborhood of Santa Ana. From there, you'll walk along Central Avenue, one of the city's most lived-in streets, where historic architecture, local commerce, and everyday life offer a glimpse into the Panama of today. Along the way, you'll explore two defining chapters of Afro-Panamanian history. First, the colonial era — from the harsh realities of slavery to powerful acts of resistance and the role people of African descent played in Panama's development. Then, discover the West Indian migrations of the 19th and 20th centuries, when thousands of Caribbean workers came to Panama and helped build the railroad and the Panama Canal. But this story doesn't end in the past. You'll discover how these histories and cultures continue to shape Panama today through its food, music, traditions, communities, and identity. The walk ends at the Afro-Antillean Museum, dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of Panama's Afro-Caribbean community. A bottled water and an Afro-Panamanian snack are included. Choose the lunch option to finish the experience at San Felipe Neri Market with Panamanian comfort food and fresh juice.
