Description
A natural adventure between volcanic walls and crystal clear waters.
Hikers in the Macho de Monte Canyon, in Chiriquí, Panama, enjoy moderate trails, explore rock formations and waterfalls, and swim in natural pools of crystal-clear water (some cold and others warm).
With local guides and caution, you can also jump from natural platforms and do adventure activities like rappelling. It's perfect for ecotourism and observing flora and fauna.
History and geological formation
The Macho de Monte Canyon was formed over 600 years ago, after the last eruption of the Barú Volcano. The combination of seismic activity and erosion from the Macho de Monte River gave rise to this natural fissure that cuts through solid volcanic rock.
The canyon is about 96 meters long, between 4 and 6 meters wide, and up to 30 meters deep.
