Golfo de Montijo
The tropical humid forest predominates, there are also pastures, savannahs, cienegas and secondary vegetation. In the Gulf, the mangrove forest predominates, with different representative species such as red mangrove, black mangrove and white mangrove. The Wetland of International Importance Golfo de Montijo represents an important habitat for migratory birds such as passage and nesting.
Among the birds found are the northern kingfisher, the osprey raptors and the mangrove sparrowhawk and the exotic Amazonian parrot frentirojo.
Location: Located in the southern part of the province of Veraguas, in the districts of Montijo, Soná, Río de Jesús, Mariato and Santiago. It covers a total area of 89,452 hectares between the marine and terrestrial zones.
How to get?
Car: Driving from Panama, take the Pan-American Highway to the central provinces. When arriving at the city of Santiago, Province of Veraguas, in front of the Hotel Piramidal, deviate taking the Central Avenue or Hector A.
Santa coloma in direction of the Cathedral Church Santiago Apostol; turn left on Calle 2da, which is the one that passes just behind the church (the same one that will take you to the town of La Colorada). Once on Calle 2da, you must take the second fork to the right, which will lead you to Montijo.
