Island of Barro Colorado
At an hour's drive from Panama City, you will arrive at Gatun Lake, part of the Panama Canal system, which houses the island of Barro Colorado, created by man. If you are looking for an educational and fascinating destination (ideal for a family day trip), this is the best you can find.
Thanks to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, visitors to Barro Colorado can spend a day hiking, discovering monkeys, toucans, sloths, bats, crocodiles and much, much more. Just remember to make the reservation in advance, since the number of visitors is strictly limited to protect this valuable ecosystem. A full visit runs from morning to late afternoon and includes transportation time from Panama City, lunch and a two to three-hour excursion with a tour guide.
